#5 Wake-Up Call

Today I was more aware of stopping at or before #5 at supper. To feel essentially "nothing" after a satisfying supper meal is not what I've been doing lately! I'll take that as my wake-up call to re-examine what my #5 is! Thanks, Lord, for the wake-up call:-) Amen.

  1. What do you mean by "feel essentially nothing"?

  2. "Nothing" feels like....well, nothing:-) I dont' feel hungry and I don't feel like I can even really "feel" the food in my tummy (no sensation of fullness or tightness or "ugh" etc)! Does that make sense?

I usually feel this "nothing" way after my breakfasts and lunches...but often go past this "nothing" feeling at suppers since my suppers tend to be the biggest/heaviest meal of the day (and usually is my time of day to indulge in dessert). Does that make sense?

I remember Heidi talking about how you should be *able* to get up and EXERCISE when you are truly within the 0-5 range. If I'm the least bit uncomfortable and have gone past that nothing feeling, fast intentional movement (aka exercise!) really doesn't appeal to me! (and btw, she wasn't advocating getting out and exercising right after meals, but just reflecting that our body essentially shouldn't feel too sluggish or uncomfortable to exercise...otherwise we're likely outside #5!)

  3. Ok, so you're saying that being at a "5" should mean feeling nothing. I'd never heard that one before. That changes my hunger scale significantly!!

  4. I think the point is that #5 is the absence of hunger and also the absence of feeling "full" but rather feeling that hunger is satisfied. So that is why the "nothing" term gets thrown around. No aching feeling of hunger and no tightness/fullness either.

Our family had a bit of awareness this past summer that we all "burp" when we're at that #5! It's actually quite strange. I don't mean a BELCH! I mean a little polite pocket of air that is a *burp*! We all found it quite interesting how we all had it happen almost every single meal:-) Maybe that's just us though!!!

I remember my youngest daughter (who is quite thin and definitely a conscious eater!) saying that she was full up to her belly button. I found that quite a fascinating concept. As I began to think about that I realized that any sensations that were above that belly button line were bordering on uncomfortable!

Here is the link where Heidi mentioned the exercise and #5...

I hope that helps some! This is all a great reminder for me as I rehash through all these thoughts on #5 with you.

I think it is really really key to pray, asking God to tell you when to stop...and then of course stopping! This is something I have been neglecting and need to get back to as I know God answered me each and every time when I prayed that prayer. Oh and try just once or twice to intentionally leave one or two of your favorite bites of food on the plate!!! AAAHHH!! I find that is a great litmus test if I'm being greedy or surrendered! So simple but revolutionary!

And one last thing, I was just browsing the TW forums and found a statement which struck me, "Is your next bite out of hunger or greed?" or something to that effect. Interesting thought!

    Take care, Lundie:-)

  5. I hope blogger lets me comment today on your blog as I tried to when you first posted this entry.

I can SO relate to your 'nothing' feeling and had been thinking about it the very day you posted this. I would say to eat till satisfied would be too much food and to eat until just before satisfied is much more accurate.

Gonna check out the link you left above-

  6. No kidding! I tried to leave one bite on my plate a couple nights ago and I couldn't do it!!! It was CRAZY! Will try that today. Just one symbolic bite. Shouldn't be hard, right? :)
